I suggested Tury, and Bischoff gave the okay. Tury was very excited about the opportunity. He found a tattoo artist who designed fake ink for him to put on so that he looked like an ex-con badass. He was my unnamed bodyguard, though later on he was given the name “Spyder.”

Having Tury around was tremendous. I got to be on the road with my best friend. God, that was so much fun. We had a great time, traveling together, partying like madmen.

Art came in and helped me take charge of the Mexican boys. They knew he was a legitimate badass, a real street fighter. He really was the law as far as the LWO was concerned, in the ring and backstage.

Once Art came into the picture, I was able to take a breath and start being me again. I started feeling the fire, trying to think of ways to make the most of my situation.

For the first time in my career, I began getting some significant mike time. I began learning how to express myself by talking about my Latino heritage, by talking about La Raza.

Slowly but surely, things progressed to the point where the LWO was being taken seriously by the fans and, more importantly, by Bischoff. What changed things was that the Latin community started getting behind us. The Latin people began coming out to the shows, cheering for the LWO.

Once again, management proved to me how little they cared about me or the other Mexican wrestlers. Even though the LWO was growing in popularity, they couldn’t be bothered to sell LWO T-shirts. Again, the only ones they printed were for us to wear on TV. Eventually they did decide to sell some LWO shirts, but only in certain markets, where they knew there was a strong Latin community.

Despite the initial nightmares, things started looking up. The vignettes got funnier and the Mexican boys started showing a little restraint. For the first time, I started thinking that the LWO might not be such a bad thing after all.

But then I went and fucked it all up for everybody.
